Ravens Rise High School Football Showdown & Coach Of The Week

During each week of the 2016 regular season, the Baltimore Ravens will recognize one local high school football game as its Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown.

This week's Showdown will feature the Reservoir (Fulton, Md.) Gators at the Centennial (Ellicott City, Md.) Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for Friday (10/21) at 7:00 p.m. In last year's matchup, the Gators bested their Howard County foe with a 39-0 win over the Eagles.

In continued support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the field for this week's Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown will be decorated with banners from the NFL's A Crucial Catch campaign. Additionally, both teams will don pink receiving gloves, wristbands, pink eye black and shoelaces donated by the Ravens. The American Cancer Society will also be on-site to help promote the campaign and accept donations. Fans in attendance are encouraged to join Poe and the Ravens Cheerleaders by wearing pink to the game.

In conjunction with The Baltimore Sun, a voting poll will be established each week to help select a game that will receive a visit from Ravens Cheerleaders and mascot Poe, have the stadium outfitted in Ravens banners and flags and obtain Ravens giveaways for fans in the stands. Additionally, a $1,000 donation will be awarded to each participating school's respective athletic program. Following the matchup, each Showdown will be highlighted with a detailed game recap and photo gallery.

Voting is now open for next week's Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown and will close Tuesday (10/25). The games available for Week 9 are:

• Hereford at Overlea (10/28 @ 7:00 p.m.)
• Milford Mill at Lansdowne (10/28 @ 6:00 p.m.)
• Western Tech at Eastern Tech (10/28 @ 7:00 p.m.)

Daryl Wade, varsity head football coach of the Baltimore City College Knights, has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Now in its 20th year of existence, Wade is the seventh recipient of the award in 2016.

Last Friday, City (4-3) defeated the Dunbar (Baltimore, Md.) Poets 20-19 for its first victory over Dunbar in 10 years. Trailing 19-12 late in the fourth quarter, Knights sophomore quarterback Mike Bond ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 1:24 remaining in the contest. Eschewing the extra point attempt in favor of a two-point conversion, Bond once again scrambled to the end zone and gave City a lead they would not relinquish.

"After we scored the last touchdown I thought we had the momentum, so it was an easy call to go for two," Wade explained. "We entered the game on a two-game losing streak, but the kids believed they could beat Dunbar. They played great team football and executed better this week than we have all season."

City travels to Edmondson-Westside (3-4) this Thursday (10/20) and looks to snap a five game winless streak against its Baltimore City rival.                          

Each week during the season, the Ravens honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. Each winner will be in attendance for the Ravens vs. Eagles game at M&T Bank Stadium on Dec. 18 for an opportunity to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year. In addition, each coach receives a $2,000 donation to the school's football program and an award from Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

These initiatives are just a piece of Ravens RISE, the team's football outreach initiative presented by Wendy's. The program impacts a range of area football players from youth to high school, providing them with a year-round opportunity to "Play Like A Raven" through clinics, tournaments, grants, ticket donations and exclusive opportunities to play at M&T Bank Stadium and interact with Ravens players and coaches.
