Ravens Name Anthony Weaver Defensive Coordinator

The Baltimore Ravens named Anthony Weaver the team's defensive coordinator, head coach Jesse Minter announced Tuesday. This marks Weaver's third stint in Baltimore, where he previously spent 2021-23 as an assistant coach and 2002-05 playing defensive end. Weaver, 45, enters his 22nd NFL season overall, including his 15th as a coach.

Statement from Ravens Head Coach Jesse Minter

"A highly-regarded defensive mind, Anthony Weaver has a proven track record of success and is the definition of what it means to be a Raven. He elevates players with his football IQ, tactical knowledge and natural teaching ability — all attributes that make him one of the game's most respected coaches."

Weaver's Career Bio Recap

In 2026, Weaver assumes Baltimore's defensive coordinator role, following two seasons (2024-25) in the same position with the Miami Dolphins.

Under Weaver's leadership in 2025, Miami's defense finished Top 15 in NFL takeaways (18), sacks (39) and forced fumbles (11). Weaver helped guide LB Jordyn Brooks to first-team AP All-Pro honors after tallying a league-leading 183 tackles (99 solo). Brooks also became the fifth player since 2000 to reach 800 career tackles in his first six NFL seasons, joining LB Roquan Smith, LB Patrick Willis, LB Luke Kuechly and LB Foyesade Oluokun. During the span of Weeks 10-18, the Dolphins' defense ranked No. 4 in strip sacks (3) and No. 8 in both interception percentage (3.0%) and total sacks (22).

In his first season (2024) with Miami, Weaver directed one of the NFL's stingiest units, as the Dolphins finished fourth in total defense (314.4 ypg allowed) – the franchise's first Top 5 defensive ranking since 2006. Miami also ranked No. 9 against the run (103.7 ypg) and was the only NFL team to not allow a 100-yard rusher. DT Zach Sieler recorded 10 sacks, becoming the first Dolphin to register double-digit sacks in consecutive seasons since DE Cameron Wake (2016-17).

Weaver previously spent three seasons (2021-23) with Baltimore, serving as run game coordinator/defensive line coach in 2021 and assistant head coach/defensive line coach from 2022-23. During that span, the Ravens allowed the NFL's third-fewest rushing yards per game (95.3), while leading the league in third-down defense (35.5%) and opponent red zone touchdown percentage (47.1%).

In 2023, Baltimore boasted the NFL's top scoring defense (16.5 ppg) en route to a 13-4 finish, earning an AFC North title and the conference's top playoff seed. The Ravens recorded a league-best 60 sacks, with DT Nnamdi Madubuike's 13 ranking ninth in the NFL (first among all DTs).

In 2022, Baltimore won 10 games and secured a playoff berth after ranking third each in scoring defense (18.5 ppg), run defense (92.1 ypg) and opponent red zone touchdown percentage (46.4%). Baltimore was also fourth in third-down defense (34.9%) and tied for fifth with 48 sacks.

In Weaver's first season (2021) with the Ravens, his defensive line played an integral role in Baltimore finishing with the NFL's No. 1 rushing defense (84.5 ypg) and No. 3 third-down unit (34.8%).

Prior to his coaching tenure in Baltimore, Weaver served as the Texans' defensive coordinator/defensive line coach in 2020 after four seasons (2016-19) as their defensive line coach. During his five seasons with Houston, he helped the Texans capture three AFC South titles and produce four Pro Bowlers along the defensive line, including three from DE Jadeveon Clowney (2016-18) and one from DE J.J. Watt (2018).

The Texans won the AFC South in 2019 and earned an AFC Wild Card playoff victory over Buffalo. That season, DT D.J. Reader recorded a career-high 52 tackles. Houston also won the division in 2018, finishing with six Pro Bowl selections and an 11-5 record. Watt earned first-team AP All-Pro honors after ranking second in the NFL with 16 sacks, while Clowney posted nine sacks. Clowney earned another Pro Bowl nod in 2017 after recording career highs in sacks (9.5) and quarterback hits (21), as Houston totaled 85 tackles for loss (sixth most in franchise history).

In his first season (2016) with Houston, Weaver contributed to a unit that led the NFL in total defense (301.3 ypg) for the first time in franchise history, also ranking No. 1 in first downs allowed per game (17.0) and No. 2 in passing defense (201.6 ypg). Clowney earned his first Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro accolades, as Houston won the AFC South and an AFC Wild Card playoff game.

Weaver served as the Browns' defensive line coach from 2014-15. In 2014, Cleveland limited opposing quarterbacks to the NFL's lowest passer rating (74.1) and tied for fourth in takeaways (29). DE Paul Kruger recorded career highs in sacks (11) and forced fumbles (four) that season.

In 2013, Weaver guided the Bills' defensive line room, mentoring three Pro Bowl linemen in DL Mario Williams, DT Kyle Williams and DT Marcell Dareus. The Bills set a franchise record with 57 sacks, including 43 by defensive linemen, as both M. Williams (13) and K. Williams (10.5) reached double-digit sacks.

Weaver entered the NFL coaching ranks in 2012 as an assistant defensive line coach with the New York Jets. His overall coaching career began at the collegiate level, serving as linebackers coach at North Texas (2011) and as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida (2010).

Weaver enjoyed a seven-year NFL career, appearing in 103 games (98 starts) with Baltimore (2002-05) and Houston (2006-08). He totaled 260 tackles, 15.5 sacks, three interceptions, 21 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. Weaver was selected by Baltimore in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.

Weaver was a four-year starting DE at Notre Dame, where he earned All-America honors and was named team captain and MVP as a senior in 2001.

A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Weaver was inducted into the Saratoga Springs Blue Streaks Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Capital Region Hall of Fame in 2011. He and his wife, Kristin, have two sons, Anthony Jr. and Justus.
