For players on the roster bubble, the Ravens' second preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys is another opportunity to make a statement.
Head Coach John Harbaugh said most starters won't play, so others will get their chance to shine. Last week, LaJohntay Wester took a major step toward locking up the No. 1 punt returner job with two impressive returns, including an 87-yard house call.
Wester seized the moment. Which players will rise against the Cowboys?
Here are some preseason thoughts on the Ravens heading into tonight's game, all in 50 words or less:
- The No. 3 safety competition has flown somewhat under the radar recently, but Saturday's game is important for Sanoussi Kane and Beau Brade. Kane appears to have the edge, but he and Brade both played regularly on special teams in 2024. The two young safeties have plenty at stake.
- The confidence that undrafted rookie Reuben Lowery has displayed while playing both corner and safety has strengthened his roster case. The Ravens love defensive players who can handle multiple positions. Lowery has adapted to that quickly.
- Outside linebacker David Ojabo says he's not focused on his 53-man roster status. "I haven't heard anything about that, honestly," Ojabo said. "I play fast, have fun, and control what I can control, which is my effort and my attitude." The more plays he makes Saturday, the stronger his case will become.
- Ojabo had a strong preseason start, which included a sack against the Colts. Adisa Isaac has also enjoyed a solid summer. If Isaac and Ojabo keep impressing, don't be surprised if the Ravens keep six outside linebackers on the roster. Young pass rushers with potential are valuable commodities.
- I think Cooper Rush will look sharper on Saturday than he did in the preseason opener. He knows game reps in August are important for backup quarterbacks. "Those preseason games do help guys in my position," Rush said. "Those reps do count. You learn from them."
- Undrafted inside linebacker Jay Higgins IV helped his bid to make the roster in the preseason opener with an interception, three tackles, and two pass breakups. Higgins played plenty of special teams at Iowa, which helps his chances. I'm interested to see what he does against Dallas.
- As always, Tyler Loop's performance in preseason Game 2 will be watched closely. He boomed a 52-yarder against the Colts but missed on his first attempt from 46 yards. Being consistent inside the 50 is crucial for Loop to have a strong rookie season.
- Don't expect Rashod Bateman to play Saturday, but I do expect him to have a strong season. Bateman hasn't reached his ceiling, and his practice chemistry with Lamar Jackson has been excellent. Bateman had nine touchdown catches in 2024, and I think he reaches double digits in 2025.
- Ravens Running Backs Coach Willie Taggart thinks Derrick Henry could play at a higher level than last year, with more experience in Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken's system. Henry being even better is a great thought for the Ravens, and a scary thought for opponents.
- The last time the Ravens played at AT&T Stadium, they were 0-2 last season and desperately needed a win. Henry rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns in his first victory as a Raven. Henry won't play on Saturday, but the regular season is getting closer. I can't wait.
