Terrell Suggs Released By the Arizona Cardinals

Terrell Suggs is a free agent again.

The former longtime Ravens outside linebacker was released by the Arizona Cardinals Friday afternoon. He will be reported on waivers until Monday.

It's a surprising development considering the Cardinals have just three games left this season and Suggs is a likely future Hall of Famer.

Suggs, 37, signed a two-year deal with the Cardinals this offseason worth a reported $10 million. It was a chance for him to return "home" to the desert where he played college football and spent his offseasons.

The Ravens tried to re-sign Suggs this offseason but Suggs chose for a change of scenery after 16 years wearing purple.

"It was a tough [decision]," Suggs said in September. "Wrestled with it, kind of made a decision in the last hour. As time has shown, both teams made the best decision. It worked out for everybody. They definitely made a last push. I just felt it was time."

Suggs got off to a good start this season with two sacks and a forced fumble in Week 1. He was shut out in a return to M&T Bank Stadium in Week 2 but notched three sacks in the following four games.

With 5.5 sacks this season, Suggs has climbed into the top-10 in all-time NFL sack leaders, which bolsters his Hall of Fame resume. His 138 sacks are ninth-most all-time, just ½ sack behind DeMarcus Ware and ½ sack ahead of Richard Dent.

Suggs has been quiet in recent games, however. He has notched just one ½ sack over the past six games and was shut out without a tackle the past two games. Out of playoff contention, the Cardinals reportedly want to get a look at some of their younger players.

The Ravens pass rush has heated up as the season has gone along. Baltimore sacked Bills quarterback Josh Allen six times and hit him 12 times. Ravens outside linebacker Tyus Bowser got a key sack/strip on Jets quarterback Sam Darnold Thursday night.

Matthew Judon has had his finest season yet with a career-high 8.5 sacks. Bowser has grown in Year 3 and rookie Jaylon Ferguson has steadily improved. Baltimore lost Suggs and Za'Darius Smith in free agency this summer but have spread the wealth. The Ravens have 16 different players with at least a partial sack this season.

Still, that didn't stop Judon from making his desires known after news broke of Suggs' release.
