A day after being introduced as the Ravens' new head coach, Jesse Minter has reportedly made a critical hire by bringing Declan Doyle to Baltimore as his offensive coordinator.
Doyle, 29, is a fast-rising coach and offensive strategist who helped the Chicago Bears' offense reach new heights last season.
While Head Coach Ben Johnson called the Bears' offensive plays, Doyle was his offensive coordinator and instrumental in developing game plans. It's a promotion for Doyle, as he would assume play-calling duties in Baltimore. Doyle reportedly withdrew from the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator search, but it appears Baltimore's opening was too good an opportunity to forgo.
"Dec's done a phenomenal job this year," Johnson said after the Bears’ season ended. "He's everything I thought he was gonna be and some. He's got a tremendous presence in front of the players. Extremely smart. ... I think the future's bright for a guy like Declan. Hopefully we can keep him here for a long time."
Doyle would be charged with returning the Ravens' offense to the top of the NFL, a position it held not long ago in 2024 in yards. Baltimore slid to 16th in yards and 11th in points last season, in part because of injuries to Lamar Jackson that forced him to miss four games.
Helping Jackson to get back to his two-time MVP form will be another key task. Jackson and Doyle are the same age.
The Bears made huge offensive strides, going from last in the NFL in yards in 2024 to sixth (369.2) in 2025. They went from 28th in points scored to ninth (25.9).
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had a Year 2 breakout in which he finished seventh in passing yards (3,942) and threw 27 touchdowns to seven interceptions. Chicago won the NFC North crown and beat the rival Green Bay Packers in the first round of the playoffs.
While Doyle was the youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL last season, he has a decade of coaching experience. He started as a student assistant at Iowa in 2016. After three seasons there, he jumped to the NFL as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints (2019-2022), then a tight ends coach with the Denver Broncos (2023-2024), before Johnson brought him to Chicago.
Johnson is one of the highest-regarded offensive minds in the NFL, creating his own spin-off of the Shanahan offense that has been highly successful in Chicago and Detroit before that. Doyle learned from him and Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton, another offensive innovator, before that.
"Right away, if you're a player or a coach, you're like, 'This guy knows his [stuff]'" Payton told Yahoo! Sports last year. "I was saying, 'Hey, I want to invest a hundred thousand on Declan's future.' If he allows me to buy in at a certain [point], I would do that with him."
