Terrell Suggs' unprecedented return to football after tearing his Achilles tendon mystified the NFL.
Now his teammates are giving him some hardware for it.
Ravens players voted Suggs as their 2012 Ed Block Courage Award winner, which honors players around the league who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage.
Suggs won the Defensive Player of the Year award on Feb. 4. Even though it wasn't a Super Bowl victory, Suggs was at the top of his career.
Then in late April, Suggs suffered the Achilles injury and went in for surgery on May 8. Even the Ravens team doctor wasn't sure if he would be back at all this year.
Suggs dealt with depression, pain and doubt during his return. But he eventually called it a "gift from God."
Just five months and six days after having surgery, Suggs unexpectedly trotted onto the field against the Houston Texans and recorded a sack in his first game back.
Long snapper Morgan Cox won the award for the Ravens last year after he played more than half a game with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his knee.
The Ed Block Courage Award Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of abused, neglected and at-risk children and ending the cycle of abuse. The purpose is to raise awareness and prevention of child abuse.
The ceremony honoring players from around the league is held in Baltimore around mid-March.
