As Ravens training camp approaches, we'll look at six of the top position group competitions: wide receiver, offensive line, outside linebacker, cornerback, safety, and kicker.

In the Hunt

  • Tyler Loop
  • John Hoyland

Projected Starter

This will be the first training camp that the Ravens will have a kicking competition since Justin Tucker beat out veteran Billy Cundiff ahead of the 2012 Super Bowl season.

The Ravens used one of their 11 draft picks in April to select Loop with the hope of having him be the kicker for years to come. He was their first choice. The team also added Hoyland, an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming, as competition.

Head Coach John Harbaugh said after mandatory minicamp that both were doing well with perfecting their swings.

"I think the biggest thing is to try to put them in tough situations as much as we can," Harbaugh said.

Under the Radar

Hoyland may not have quite the power that Loop does, but he has stayed afloat with his accuracy in the battle thus far.

He finished his five-year collegiate career making 79.3% of his field-goal attempts and 99.3% of his extra points. The Colorado native can also boot it from distance when he needs to. He made eight field goals of 50 yards or more in his final three years at Wyoming, including a 56-yarder in 2023.
